Renewing our Eucharist: a Sermon Series

Christians have been doing it since the experience on the Emmaus Road (Luke 24.13-35); breaking bread together. They discovered on that first Easter Sunday that they encountered Jesus alive, both in the holy scripture and in bread blessed and broken in his name. The same discovery has been made by millions of Christians through the next two millennia, as they too broke bread and listened with attention to the words of scripture. Sunday by Sunday, on the Lord’s Day, they encountered Jesus truly and spiritually as they gathered with brother and sister Christians to “do this in memory of me.”
We at St Bart’s find exactly the same as we come to church, Sunday by Sunday. We encounter our Lord, in the holy scriptures, in the bread and wine of the Eucharist, and in one another. All of us, long-standing members of the church as well as recent joiners, need to refresh and renew our celebration of the Eucharist. We are never too young or too old to learn. To help us in this, the Sundays of February this year will offer a series of sermons to help us reflect on our Eucharist. Each takes its title from a different part of the liturgy: Gathering, Word, Table and Sending Out
